Having worked at Donatos during his years attending The Ohio State University, Raleigh resident, Doug Whitmer, had an affinity for the taste and quality of his favorite pizza-Donatos. After graduation, Doug and his wife Miriam have spent the years living in various areas around the US. On every trip back to Ohio, they would comment, "wouldn't it be nice to have a Donatos back home?" In early 2012, Doug found an Ohio State Alumni on-line forum about Donatos' plans for expansion and their search for new partners. It was at that moment Doug and Miriam decided to write that fateful email, inquiring about the opportunity.
Intrigued by the idea, and the love for the product, Doug began researching the potential to introduce the Donatos experience to the Raleigh market. Doug knew that he would want a partner and the only person he would consider was his long-time friend Jim McCarthy. A resident of Dayton, Ohio, Jim and his family are loyal customers of their local Donatos, or as his oldest son claims, "the best pizza on the planet!" Doug and Jim began to share with each other their vision of creating a great company with great purpose. With this incredible opportunity in front of them, they formed Buckeye Food Group, LLC and signed an agreement to bring Donatos to the Triangle.
Enter Tom Bonavita. Tom is a born and raised Raleigh native complete with a degree from NC State University. Tom has a career history of over 20 years in the restaurant industry, with such industry heavy-weights as Chili's and Red Robin Gourmet Burgers. The restaurant business is in his blood, as his grandfather owned a small pizzeria, "Bonnie's," in Kingston, New York when Tom was just a child. Doug and Tom were introduced and immediately hit it off. All it took was one trip to the home office in Columbus and Tom was also hooked on the great taste, sound operations and most importantly, the incredible team at Donatos. Tom joined Doug and Jim and the Buckeye Food Group team was set.
